As China prepares to play a role that it has rehearsed and dreamt of for years, an editorial by the state-run news agency gave a telling flash of Beijing’s teeth.

The language was darkly evocative. Written just two weeks after a two-year-old Chinese girl was run down and 18 people were filmed ignoring the mangled child, the Xinhua editorial asserted that China would not be a “bystander” of the eurozone crisis, and that emerging economies “should not be seen as the EU’s Good Samaritans”.

They were expecting the Prince of Wales; they got a very different royal replacement, with far better hair.
