可怜的荷兰印象

 

耀眼的荷兰队

荷兰这个国家有点可怜,在英语中,用来形容荷兰的片语,都是负面的。十七世纪时,英国人和荷兰人争取海上霸权,留下了很深的仇视,因此,英语的词汇里,就留下了对荷兰的贬词:

Dutch Courage: ‘荷兰人的勇气’–指的是酒后之勇,既指荷兰人是酒鬼,也指荷兰人懦弱。

Double Dutch:  ‘双重荷兰语’(指听不懂的莫名其妙的话,叽里咕噜的话)

I am a Dutchman:  ‘如果…,我就是荷兰人!’(表示不信),例如,你可以说,“如果英格兰赢球,我就是荷兰人”,意思就是说,我是绝不相信英格兰会赢球的。

Dutch Uncle:( ‘荷兰的长辈’)如果你说,我要去  ‘talk to him like a Dutch uncle’,你的意思是说你会严厉地去规劝或谴责这个人。

还有一个最普遍的,就是去餐厅吃饭时,和朋友Go Dutch ( ‘let’s go Dutch!’),或称Dutch treat, 就是说大家各自付账,没人请客。这个用法,可能是影射荷兰人在金钱上斤斤计较。
